Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why do I have to pay in advance and why don't you offer refunds?
A: CatrinaQ Performing Arts is a studio and just like a dance studio or musical theatre troupe, students pay for classes in advance with no refunds if they are unable to participate. I do allow for rescheduling under certain conditions(please see Things to Know- aka policies).

Q: I’d love to study with you but you're in Orlando and I'm in Los Angeles… Do you offer virtual lessons?
A: Yes, I offer virtual lessons via FaceTime, Zoom, and Skype for students, coast to coast!

Q: I have two children that would like to study with you. Can they take at the same time at the rate of one student?
A: The only time I take two students at once is if they are rehearsing for a duet and that would be at an adjusted rate. I believe students need their own special time and space to get to know themselves. Siblings, however, do receive a 10% discount.

Q: Can I watch my child’s lesson?
A: I’ll be honest with you, in all of my years, I have never had a student that wants their parents to watch their private lesson. It’s a lot different than watching a group ballet class though the studio window. Private lessons can be downright awkward. We are in the process of learning new material or trying to get through rough patches in songs. Some students are experiencing changes in their voice or are having a horrible day and can’t seem to apply notes. Sometimes the presence of anyone else besides the educator feels daunting or adds anxiety to a situation where the student is already being judged, albeit constructively. I can’t gain the trust of a student in that environment. If the student is in agreement, some neat alternatives could be making a voice memo for the parent, filming a snippet of warm ups, or perhaps even performing a few measures at the end of the lesson.

Q: I’m not interested in becoming a pro, but I’d really like to gain more self confidence and become better at public speaking. Am I still a candidate for your studio?
A: This is what I love to hear! The best part of being alive is being happy and feeling good about yourself! And if I can promote wellness through the performing arts, then let’s book those lessons. I am happy to work with you on anything and everything!

Q: Why do you charge a late fee?
A: Over the years, late payments have become a real issue and I have been forced to set regulations that you would find in any performing arts studio. Paying on time allows rates to stay reasonable.

Q: What is your teaching style like?
A: My teaching style is very honest, yet relaxed. I truly enjoy getting to know my students. It makes them more comfortable and also makes them better performers. While it’s a fun, safe environment, I will always provide constructive criticism in a nurturing way. There will always be lots of smiles and lots of laughs, guaranteed!

Q: How can you be a good voice teacher if you don't accompany your students on the piano?
A: I consider myself a vocal coach, not a voice teacher. I provide each student with a vocal demonstration track and an instrumental track after the intake lesson. At the second lesson, students are expected to arrive knowing the melody so that all focus can go toward technique, text analysis, stylization and performance- just some of the tricks in my magic bag! My teaching method has never been an obstacle to a good vocal education. I do read music and will teach music theory, as needed. I also know some of the best pianists and accompanists in the business should any of my clientele need to rehearse for an audition or procure a recording.

Q: If I forget my lesson, will you contact me to remind me?
A: No, if a student is late or a no call/no show the full rate is still expected and I am under no obligation to extend the session or reschedule.
